Tablets spoil the party for PCs in 2010

New Delhi: The last quarter of 2010 witnessed an increase of 3.1 percent in PC shipments from the fourth quarter of 2009. The total number of PC shipments in the quarter totalled 93.5 million units worldwide.

These figures were released by Gartner, which had earlier predicted that a 4.8 percent growth for the fourth quarter of 2010. Mikako Kitagawa, Principal Analyst, Gartner said, "Overall, holiday PC sales were weak in many key regions due to the intensifying competition in consumer spending. Media tablets, such as the iPad, as well as other consumer electronic (CE) devices, such as game consoles, all competed against PCs."The fourth quarter however saw a steady growth in the PC market that was mainly driven by replacement purchases. Going forward, the PC market is set to face challenges from the new convergent devices like tablets.

Hewlett Packard (HP) was in top of the rung in the PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010. However, HP's professional business was offset by a weak consumer PC business in the U.S. HP shone in other professional and consumer markets of Europe, Middle East, and Africa, although Asia/Pacific continued to be a challenging region for HP.

Similarly other companies that surged in the period include Dell, Lenovo, while Acer faced challenges due to a slowdown in the overall consumer mobile PC market.

However, the PC market fared better than what it did in 2009. In 2010, worldwide PC shipments totaled 350.9 million units in 2010, a 13.8 percent increase from the previous year. This growth rate was an improvement from 2009 when PC shipments increased 5.5 percent.

‘Wireless’ humans could backbone new mobile networks

People could form the backbone of powerful new mobile internet networks by carrying wearable sensors. The sensors could create new ultra high bandwidth mobile internet infrastructures and reduce the density of mobile phone base stations.Engineers from Queen’s Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology are working on a new project based on the rapidly developing science of body-centric communications.Social benefits could include vast improvements in mobile gaming and remote healthcare, along with new precision monitoring of athletes and real-time tactical training in team sports, an institute release said. The researchers are investigating how small sensors carried by members of the public, in items such as next generation smartphones, could communicate with each other to create potentially vast body-to-body networks. The new sensors would interact to transmit data, providing ‘anytime, anywhere’ mobile network connectivity.Simon Cotton from the i
