A thinner and lighter iPad soon

Apple Inc has started manufacturing a “thinner and lighter” version of its iPad tablet computer that will also have a built-in front-facing camera and faster processor. The new version of the iPad will have a camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing, the Wall Street Journal quoted people familiar with the matter as saying. “The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the first model,” the report added. It will also have more memory and a more powerful graphics processor. The new iPad would initially be available through carriers Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc in the United States. “The production of the new iPad shows how Apple is moving forward in the wake of Chief Executive Steve Jobs’s disclosure last month that he was taking a medical leave for an unspecified ailment,” the Journal said. The report further said the one feature in the new iPad that may “disappoint” consumers will be the lack of significant improvement in the r

Google’s Social Search Announcement Omits Facebook

Google announced that its latest search engine would have more integration with social media, and managed to do so without mentioning Facebook even a single time in an entire blog post – markedly contrasting Microsoft’s announcement of the new Bing browser. The conspicuous omission adds irony to Google’s claim that its social search results are comprehensive. Sure, the company’s announcement does allude to Twitter and Flickr, in addition to YouTube, but the words “and other sites” appears to be a way avoid referring to Facebook. Similarly, we see irony in Google’s assertion that it has “given you more control over how you connect accounts, and made connecting accounts more convenient.” Unless the search company has changed its tune on interoperability with Facebook — try importing your Gmail address onto the social network, or vice versa — it seems like “more control” might not equal “complete control.” What’s your opinion of Google’s announcement, and how the co

Microsoft Puts Facebook In Latest Bing Browser

Microsoft’s Bing browser now has Facebook functionality built into the toolbar, now available for free download here . An exhaustive description of the newest version of the browser appears on  Bing’s blog, which includes a good video demonstration that we’ve embedded at the bottom of this post. The gist of the Facebook embedding inlcudes prominent iconography in the toolbar, plus notifications from the social network that pop up even when you’re not on the site. And you can check your mail, which might become handier as the new messaging platform becomes more entrenched among users. I like how the new browser seems like a toned down version of RockMelt, which puts so much emphasis on social media that you get distracted from whatever you were originally planning to browse — I mean, when I’m not on Facebook, I don’t need to see images of all of my friends who are on the site. Have you tried the newest Bing toolbar, and if so, what do you think of it? Video: New

Microsoft Globalizes Hotmail Access To Facebook Chat

Just a few days after announcing social media functionality in the newest version of the Bing toolbar, Microsoft announced that the ability to access Facebook chat within Hotmail is now available in every part of the world that the social network reaches. The Microsoft Windows blog explained: When we first announced the ability to  chat with Facebook friends from Hotmail , we were only able to offer this to customers in six regions. Since then, we’ve been working with Facebook to increase availability, and a few weeks ago, we announced that the feature was  available globally through Messenger . Today this is available around the world through Hotmail too. And while Gmail beat us to bringing their own chat into the inbox, we have now gone a step further and brought both our own chat and Facebook chat into your inbox. Starting now, we will be displaying notifications of this update in Hotmail. Since announcing the availability of Facebook chat in

Egyptian Baby Girl Named ‘Facebook’ After Revolution

TechCrunch obtained a translation from Egypt’s Al-Ahram , which is interestingly a  government-owned news outlet, saying: The girl’s family, friends, and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook. “Facebook” received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name. Although the Egyptian revolution had some planning via Twitter, direct text mes

Facebook Posts Are 3 Times More Powerful Than Tweets

The group buying startup ChompOn has calculated the value of a Facebook posting in driving social shopping — at $14, it’s nearly three times what a Tweet is worth. And likes are worth $8. ChompOn qualifies that its figures underestimate the values and have relevancy only for the company’s next sale of a group buying opportunity — the startup’s deals let clients completely brand the offerings as their own, in contrast to the co-branding strategy of Groupon and others in the space., and features deals on social media. Since ChompOn makes money by featuring deals on different types of social media, it’s in the company’s best interest to release statistics on the value of these different types of promotions. Here’s how the startup explains the methodology behind the calculation that sharing something on Facebook is worth $14 and liking is worth $8: For shares and Tweets, we were able to directly attribute sales to the original action, so we simply took the to

Novel Released On Facebook Coming Out In Print

Comments (1)   Facebook as Weapon will become available in some bookstores next week, becoming the first book originally published serially on the social network and debuting in print thereafter. Journalist-turned-novelist Ivo Scepanovic’s  literary experiment planned all along to eventually publish his book in print. His page on the social network allowed people to comment on Facebook as Weapon , and he modified the plot based on their suggestions. However, he wrote it all in Croatian, which has left a lot of people out of the experiment. It’s unclear what the print format of the book will look like, or whether it will get translated into other languages. The novelty of the whole endeavor will probably attract curious buyers regardless of whether they can actually understand the words on the page or not. And the person who commented the most on the novel in progress received an offer to write the next installment in what will bec

Cockroaches inspiration behind future robots

Ask anyone who has ever tried to squash a skittering cockroach - they’re masters of quick and precise movement. And scientists are now trying to incorporate this feature in robots of the future. Prof. Amir Ayali, zoologist at Tel Aviv University in Israel, says the study of cockroaches has already inspired advanced robotics. Robots have long been based on these six-legged houseguests, whose nervous system is relatively straightforward and easy to study, according to a Tel Aviv statement. He and his fellow researchers are delving deeper into the neurological functioning of the cockroach. This, he says, will give engineers the information they need to design robots with a more compact build and greater efficiency in terms of energy, time, robustness and rigidity. Such superior robotics can be even used to explore new terrain in outer space. Prof. Ayali says it’s clear why robotics have been inspired by these insects. A cockroach is supported by at least three legs

Soon, a caring robot that can keep elderly entertained

Scientists are developing a new robot which they say can help remind elderly people to take their medication and monitor their vital signs. Researchers in New Zealand, who are now customising the robot with gaming facilities, claimed that the machine would soon be able to entertain the elderly people while encouraging exercise and mobility. Stickmen Studios, a Christchurch-based gaming company, which conceived the idea of a “caring robot”, has developed a game called Kung Fu Funk that can help rehabilitate people who have suffered brain injuries. Now, the company has teamed up with researchers at the University of Auckland to customise a robot with the gaming facilities that will help elderly people stay active through interactive games, the New Zealand Herald reported. The robot, which will be used for the purpose, is called Eldercare and it has been created with South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. The aim of the robot, acco

Facebook Enables New App-generated Requests, Updates Bookmark Count Functionality [Updated]

Facebook has made a series of significant changes to its viral channels over the past several years. Since launching with almost no restrictions on developer use of notifications, requests, and the news feed, Facebook has systematically changed the way viral channels work to try to find the right balance between providing powerful distribution options for developers and protecting the user experience. Today, Facebook launched some updates to requests that it’s calling  “Requests 2.0″ that introduces app-generated requests and simplifies the process of managing the home page bookmark counters that alert users to outstanding requests. App-generated Requests Facebook first added app-to-user notifications for developers in August 2008 , but then removed them in February 2010 after the signal to noise ratio of the notifications channel had become too low to justify the spammy experience for users. Since then, the primary channel for app to user communication has been emai

10 Useful Tools For Cross-Browser Compatibility Check

Something that makes a website great  is when it is compatible in multiple browsers regardless of version. Technically this is referred to as cross-browser compatibility . Wikipedia defines cross-browser as: The ability for a website, web application, HTML construct or client-side script to support all the web browsers. Now, you may be confused on what is the difference between cross-browser and multi-browser. Multi-browser means a website will work in several web browsers like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer. While cross-browser means a website works in any browser, and any version of the browser, being used. Image by: lagiamd This can be a struggle for developers throughout the creation of their websites. If a user cannot view your website properly, he will not blame the operating system or his browser…he will blame the website itself. The goal as developers is to avoid that. That’s why there are tools available for free, or purchase, to make your cross-browse
