Headphone Jack Adapter Turns The iPhone Into A Remote For RC Toys

By Andrew Liszewski While devices like Sphero or Parrot’s AR.Drone that use the iPhone or iPod Touch as a remote control usually just rely on the device’s built-in wifi or Bluetooth, these AppToyz, from a UK-based company called MediaSauce, use a cheap add-on dongle to communicate over RF I assume. And instead of interfacing with the dock connector on the bottom of the iPhone or iPod Touch, the AppToyz dongle plugs into the headphone jack which seems to be standard procedure for third-party remote control hardware like this. As a result, when available sometime this year, they’ll be a bit more affordable than something like the AR.Drone with an RC helicopter selling for ~$80 (£50) and an RC car that’s a bit cheaper at ~$47 (£30) .

Acer Aspire One E100 Education netbook dual-boots Windows & Android

Acer has unveiled its latest netbook, the Aspire One E100 Education, and as the name suggests it’s targeted at classrooms. The 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 ultraportable dual-boots Windows 7 and Android – the latter being positioned as an instant-on option for quick browsing – and can be specified with a rubberized coating for bump protection; there’s also a pocket into which a student can slot their name card, so that multiple E100 units don’t get confused. Other specs include a 250GB hard-drive, 1GB of RAM and WiFi b/g/n, together with Bluetooth 2.1 and a multi-format memory card reader. It uses an unspecified Intel Atom processor, weighs about a pound and is 24mm thick; Acer reckons the battery is good for 8hrs of runtime. As for software, there’s apparently a variety of free education apps on offer, and Acer also preloads its Classroom Manager app which allows a teacher to remotely interact with multiple student systems. No word on pricing at this stage.

Apple Brings the App Store to Twitter

Share   69 email share   Apple has launched @AppStore, a new Twitter account for its popular iOS and Mac App Store. The new @AppStore Twitter account only made its debut a few hours ago, but it has already amassed more than 35,000 Twitter followers as of this writing. For comparison, its sister account, @iTunesMusic , has more than 680,000 followers. As the accounts first tweet explains, @AppStore will feature new apps in Apple’s iOS and Mac App Stores and provide exclusive offers for Twitter users. For example, the account’s second tweet provided a quick pitch and a link to Nike’s Training Club app. Creating a Twitter account for the App Store seems like a simple and effective way to generate more buzz and more downloads about featured apps. It’s essentially the same thing Apple has been doing with its App Store Facebook Page , which has nearly 1 million fans. Apple also has five popular iTunes Twitter accounts tweeting about new films, music a

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 features leaked – Launching officially soon?

A lot of great things have been happening lately with DEVCON Asia, details on OS 6.1, and a rumor of a new BBM hitting the streets soon.  RIM is prepping up a lot of goodies this year including new devices with higher specs and hopefully one day QNX OS on mobiles.  Their ace in the hole is BlackBerry Messenger. Now being BlackBerry users, we all should be pretty familiar with it. BBM is loved by BBM users, and often tried copied but never duplicated by other platforms and developers. RIM is looking to take BBM to another level with BBM 6.  Continue reading to check out more features. Some of the features of BBM 6 so far include: The ability to play games and use your BBM user name as your gamer name Cross chats between users over BBM (and it looks like you and the other parties playing don’t have to be on each other friends list) Also, when we complete tasks on these new games our status will change to show what task we completed (sounds like its si

HTC Flyer Specs Leaked!

I, for one, have been waiting far too long for this. We've gotten word from the guys over at Amobil , who have the leaked specs for HTC's Android tablet, aka the Flyer. Before I get into the specs, the picture above is a mockup, and might not even be an HTC tablet. Now then, the Flyer will be packing: A 7-inch, 1024x600 resolution screen, which is the same as the Galaxy Tab Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, found in the Desire HD HDMI port DLNA-enabled for wireless movie/music streaming 5MP rear camera with LED flash and facial recognition 1.3MP front-facing camera for video chatting, with Skype preinstalled At the time they received the specs, the Flyer was running Gingerbread, but Honeycomb was released shortly after, so we can't confirm which version it'll be running out-of-the-box A remodeled version of Sense that has a "desktop" feel to it HSPA connectivity (T-Mobile, anyone?) There's also apparently a 10-inch tablet in the works,

Topaz Specs! Exclusive details on Touchstone v2 and much more!

We've received a massive document detailing HP's plans for the Topaz webOS slate from last year. While these details aren't final, what we know is that HP is planning to make the Topaz highly competitive with the iPad from both a hardware and a software perspective. We've got a better idea of the specs, we've got prototype photos, we've got plans, and plenty more. Oh yes, you want to click that Read More link right now. Targeted Topaz Specs It looks like HP is going with the Qualcomm MSM8660 processor clocked at 1.2GHz rather than the new hotness coming from NVIDIA (however we did see one random NVIDIA logo in the document, take that for what it's worth). However, there probably won't be any flies on that 8660, as it sports two scorpion cores in the Snapdragon-based processor. The MSM8660 has a built-in Adreno 220 GPU with 2D

Motorola Blocks Bootloader In Android OS

It is very common to have an Android Phone from Motorola with blocked bootloader. Blocking the bootloader not only restricts the Motorola Android device users to upgrade to another version of Android or to use some other operating system. This makes things ridiculous as to restrict upgrade or use another Android version is an appalling act. The e-fuse mechanism performs the duty for Motorola to block the bootloader. This mechanism comes built-in with Android phones from the company. You are also bounded to not to overclock the processor with this mechanism. This mechanism has established a fairly large group of users who felt aggrieved from the manufacturer of this type of behavior. Appeals did not help, therefore, taken the final step – using BOINC project – MilestoneRSA, benefiting from the bruteforce algorithm, trying to find the key RSA 1024, which will allow users to customize the sign for the phone. However, Motorola does not intend to resign. Although the e-fuse

Sony VAIO SA and SB show up at European e-tailers with 13-inch screens, Core i5 / i7 CPUs, SSD options

Looks like Sony is preparing to freshen up the top end of its laptop range with a pair of new VAIO series, the SA and SB. An Intel Core i7-2620M is found populating a listing for an SA1X9E/XI model, alongside 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 128GB of SSD storage, AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics, and a 1600 x 900 resolution squeezed into a 13.3-inch screen. All that for a measly £1,571 (nearly $2,500). What's intriguing about that 2.7GHz dual-core CPU is that Intel lists a February 20th launch date for it, potentially giving us a hint as to when Sony will put the trigger with its refresh. The VAIO SB laptops are set to be the tamer offering, being built around the latest Core i5 chips , though we've yet to know for certain what any of these new machines will actually look like. So, for your speculative pleasure, we've embedded a video after the break with some prototypes spotted at CES that could end up slapped with the SA / SB labels.

Manage your VirtualBox VMs via the web with phpVirtualBox

Generally speaking, if it is a web-based tool that starts with “php” (such as phpMyAdmin or phpLDAPadmin) you know that tool is going to make your administrative life a lot easier. Such is the case with a php-based tool created to help you manage all of your VirutalBox VMs from a single tool, from anywhere (so long as said “anywhere” is accessible from, you guessed it, anywhere). I do use VirtualBox and was thrilled to come across phpVirtualBox . This tool is an AJAX implementation of the familiar VirtualBox user interface, so the minute you log in you will be instantly at home. Let’s take a look at how this tool is installed and used. First things first You need to make sure you have the latest VirtualBox installed as well as the Extension Pack. You can run phpVirtualBox with the 3.x release of VirtualBox, but there are a lot more features available in the 4.x release. You can download both from the VirtualBox download page . You will also need to have the PHP Soap ext

Introducing the Amazon Simple Email Service

Like most technical endeavors, sending email is a lot harder than it looks! The simple solutions that are entirely adequate when you have to send a couple of dozen daily emails simply don't work when you need to send out hundreds, thousands, or even millions of emails over the same time period. To pick just one issue, let's talk about something that the email pros call deliverability . This is a measure of how well you are doing at actually getting email through to the intended recipients. It is affected by a number of factors and is absolutely crucial to the successful implementation of your email strategy. In order to maximize deliverability, you need to work with multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to ensure that they trust your content, and you need to monitor and control the number of complaints and bounces that you generate. After spending time and money building out an internal hardware platform, negotiating expensive agreements with third-party vendo

8 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Get More Out of Twitter

Scott Gerber is a serial entrepreneur, angel investor, public speaker and author of Never Get a “Real” Job: How to Dump Your Boss, Build a Business and Not Go Broke . The content for this post was sourced from the Young Entrepreneur Council, a group of successful Gen Y business owners. You can submit your questions to this group on NeverGetaRealJob.com . To tweet or not to tweet. That is the question on many business owners’ minds. For some, Twitter has proven to be a powerful way to engage customers and build a community. For others, tweeting has been nothing but a useless time suck. The fact is, most small business owners have no concept about how to use Twitter effectively. Many entrepreneurs simply produce and promote useless spam, while others over extend and over engage. In order to teach business owners how to benefit from this tool, I asked a panel of successful young entrepreneurs how their entrepreneurial brethren can utilize Twitter to their advantage rather tha
